What was the original meaning of art? Integrating a biocultural perspective, this lecture will argue that art was a magical alleviation of the human birth trauma, the biological circumstance that the baby is driven from the womb in a radically immature state. In an extension of Lacan, culture could generally be understood as a means to re-establish womblike conditions in the outer world, but when language and technol- ogy failed in this function, art as magic took over.
